Adoption FAQ

What is Included in my Adoption Fee?
What a deal! All adoptable animals have had a preliminary vet exam with tests for common diseases, have been spayed/neutered, and are up-to-date on vaccines and deworming. While a "free," animal in the classifieds may sound like a better deal at first, these services could end up costing you over $800 if you had to do it on your own.

It's truly the most economical way to add a new pet to the family. Plus, you are helping save a life!

Dogs 6 months of age or older are tested for heartworm, All cats are tested for FLV/FIV. Depending on the age of your new pet, you may need to follow up with your vet for additional vaccine boosters soon after adoption. We will provide medical and vaccine records to take to your new pet's veterinarian.
What is the adoption Process?
When you find the right pet for you, you will complete a brief adoption application. After your application has been reviewed and approved, you will sign the adoption contract, pay your adoption fee, and then you can take your new friend home!

Adoption Rules/Requirements
A vet reference is required for adoption. Our adoption counselors may also ask for personal references and conduct a home visit. A fenced yard or some other form of containment for your new pet on your personal property is required. Adopters will need to bring a leash or pet carrier in order to safely transport their new pet home.
What is a Barn cat?
Picture
Do you have a barn, warehouse, or other property that you'd like to keep free of rodents and pests? We have some cats who would love to work for you! "Barn Cats" are kitties who would prefer not to live in a home and might not want you to pet them, but they are great at keeping the pests at bay and fun to admire from a distance.

By adopting a Barn Cat, you are helping us provide creative homes for homeless cats who otherwise might have nowhere else to go. We will provide you with everything you need to get your Barn Cat started. It takes about a month for a cat to become acclimated to a new territory, so you'll need to start by keeping the cat in a large cage or sectioned-off area, feeding them daily. The area can be gradually increased over the next month until the cat learns that this is its new home. Barn Cats cannot survive on rodents, alone, so you must be willing to put out fresh food and water daily.

We Can't Do It Without You

Campbell County can only become a No-Kill Community through the help of adopters, fosters, volunteers, donors, and responsible pet owners.

By adopting a pet from our shelter, you are giving a home to an animal in need, creating more space at our shelter for the animals still waiting for homes, and raising awareness in our community that there are great pets in shelters. And of course, no matter where you got your four legged friend, spaying and neutering is the single most effective way to end pet homelessness!
